Challenging Distorted Thinking
Many people find themselves automatically thinking in ways that, when looked at realistically, are negative, exaggerated or based on assumptions or incorrect perceptions. These distorted thoughts increase our negative feelings about ourselves and the world we live in, and can make us miserable.
Do any of the following examples sound familiar?
* You feel that if you don't complete something perfectly or make a small mistake, you have failed.
* You focus the majority of your attention on negative details of a situation, and tend to disregard the positive.
* You live your life based on a list of inflexible rules regarding what you, and others, "should" or "should not" do.
The first step in changing distorted thinking is to become aware of it. Many of us have a non-stop stream of negative, distorted thoughts constantly running through our minds. Once you learn to step back and observe the thoughts, then you can begin the process of challenging these distortions.
I have worked with many people to successfully change their distorted thinking patterns. It takes time, hard work and practice, but it is possible to do. Are you curious to find out more about how you might begin the process of changing your own negative thinking?
